Painting The Spirit of Life

“Come See What I have found!”

I found the "spirit of life" and an exciting way to share it with you so you can experience hope, renewal and belonging.

The purpose of an artist: To be able to see what is not apparent and paint that spirit on canvas. As Frederick Franck put it “The Awakened Eye.”

Astronauts: When the astronauts looked back at the earth they were amazed at the miracle of life that was happening on this world. We belong with the other elements in this world, such as air, water, earth, plants, and animals. All cooperating together for the continuation of life. This cooperation is the “spirit of life” which brings hope and renewal.

Sensitive: Kendall is a sensitive artist who found a way to paint powerful paintings with that “spirit of life” in exquisite detail that come from his heart and imagination. He paints the welcoming belonging, the renewing and hope the spirit of life has. His paintings are not ordinary paintings. He has gone beyond traditional art forms and created a new art form which allows him to paint paintings with feelings of hope and renewal along with the delightful feeling of being in real nature.

Kendall’s Story

Kendall was born and raised near the entrance of Yellowstone Park and the Grand Tetons in eastern Idaho where he enjoyed hiking, motor cycling, canoeing, and fishing on all the back trails. Born into a family of poets, writers, and musicians, his French-English heritage gives him passion, sensitivity, and a flair for perfectionism.

Kendall’s family: They had a “family business”. From the time he was a preschooler on through his young adult years he was taught that the survival of the family business depended on him being part of it. Kendall felt that his standing in the family was closely tied to what he could do in the business. After years of being in the business, the dynamics became very oppressive for him, his job became obsolete, he was no longer wanted in the business and out of necessity he had to leave the business. He no longer had work, a career, a way to take care of his family. He felt lost and despair.

Belonging: Kendall went into a deep state of depression after leaving the family business. As he sought for relief he found that being in nature seemed to help. He spent hours being in nature. He often took his daughter with him to hike in the forest. He affectionately calls her “nature girl”. One time as they were standing by Jackson Lake, in Wyoming, looking across to the Teton mountains, she said “This is for you, you are important, you have something valuable to give.” That encouragement was life saving for him. His painting of “Playful Painter Sun, Gold Mist Palette” reminds him of that tender moment with his daughter, in nature.

Healing: He began to feel even more a part of nature and to feel what nature had. He saw how nature was always changing, becoming, and renewing. There was a future in nature. From nature he felt that there was the process of changing and things would happen, good things could happen with effort and faith. He was able to feel those truths and positive things in nature and inspired him to do that in his life. He searched out who he was and what his talents and abilities were. He used his fine art background to create a new art form to paint with. Then he experienced a great healing process as he painted his first five paintings that he gratefully named “New Hope Series” He discovered that he had a great desire to share the healing feelings he found in nature, the hope, the renewal with others. The new painting medium he created made it possible for him to carefully paint in those healing feelings of nature in each of his paintings.

New Career: A few years before Kendall had to leave the family electronics business, Kendall felt that electronics was not who he was. So, he went back to college and decided to study fine art. Kendall loved the language of art and it felt like an important part of who he was. After four years of intense study in art school and applying all he learned he was honored with the Presidential Award for Best Artist. He decided to find a way to use his fine art training to create a new career as an artist.

He had in his mind and heart a desire to paint his feelings of nature in its wonderful real detail. He tried traditional mediums but couldn’t create all that he wanted to express. He felt that possibly there could be a way with a new painting medium. He spent three years of intense struggle to develop his own fine art painting tools. With these tools it became possible for him to paint inspirational paintings from his mind, beautiful paintings with incredible detail. He used the fine art principles of the masters with the technology of today. In describing his painting work he says, “I am in a computer at a canvas, that canvas is as real as any out here. The tools are real but they are beyond oil, watercolor, and acrylic. I have many palettes to choose from. I can paint with all the elements and principles of fine art, but in detail.”

Kendall is the creator and pioneer of this new fine art medium, which he named “Giclée Painting on Canvas”. His new art form encompasses reality-real nature, impressionism, contemporary, realism. His new way of painting allows him to paint his emotions, stories, and poetry in a powerful manner. Imagine the familiar feelings of nature around you as you wander through one of his paintings and experience the hope and renewal that is part of the “spirit of life.” His powerful paintings can bring you to a new realm, an exciting new place to be.

Five Disciplines

Kendall has five important disciplines to create these paintings. It is rare to find someone who has all five of these.

1)  Share stories and poetry with emotions: He was sought after in high school for his writing skills for the high school newspaper. He studied and became skilled at writing  about real emotions in a poetic manner and has a flare for story telling with a delightful  touch of humor. He expresses those emotions, stories, and humor in his artwork.

            2)  Fine art skills: Four years of college level art school.

            3)  Professional photography:  As a young boy he was fascinated with photography and started his life-long study of it when he was nine, which eventually led him to be a skilled  professional photographer. He paints with photo references which he skillfully takes.

            4)  Use of an extensive background in computer technology, hardware, and software, to create a brand-new virtual painting environment.

            5)  Professional printing skills:  To get his paintings in a tangible form required extensive study of printing methods, calibration, and the skill to run a large format printer.  He affectionately calls his printer his paint brush because that is how he renders his paintings on canvas.

Revolutionary New Art Form

“I have found a way to combine the traditions of the fine art masters with new technology to create and pioneer a revolutionary new exciting art form. Now it is possible for me to put what is in my imagination and what I feel more clear and exact on canvas than any other art form from the past would allow. I have been defining the parameters of this new art form since 1995 when it became possible for me to paint this way. This new way to paint is a window into the art of the future, where real nature and the “spirit of life” can be painted on canvas.”

New Painting Medium - Art of the Future

Palette: liquid bush, sky, wood, leaves, water,

Technique: combination of oil, water colour, and acrylic painting techniques, with some sculpting, pencil, and air brush techniques.

Process: thumbnails, sketches, natural color elements, glazes, blending, washes, masking, values, perspective, pigments, and more.

A painting medium is not just pigments on canvas. In order to understand the whole broader meaning of the new medium Kendall is using you will need to open your mind and imagine something more than you already know. The simple label for my new medium, which is similar to the label "oil painting on canvas", is "Giclee painting on canvas" In this new painting medium the actual physical materials are canvas and a water base pigment with agents for longevity, and color gamut. Giclee painting on canvas is a new exciting way to actually paint, not just a way to copy paintings or photographs on canvas.

Kendall’s paintings take months or years to complete including composition and all principles and elements of design that master painters use. He have complete control over every aspect of the painting.

Kendall’s medium involves a complex process from beginning to the final result. This new painting medium has many ingredients which intermingle through the whole process. Each redefines the other. The over-lying ingredient is fine art painting with fine art principles, elements, and spirit. Another ingredient is the use of specialized liquid photo references, not as the camera sees the reference, but as the painting needs the reference. This painting material is obtained from a palette which includes, among other things, references mingled with color elements and brush strokes in the digitized environment of the computer.

In this environment Kendall can paint his feelings and imagination with liquid detail. He also has complete control of every element of the painting. Each element is painted using deliberate choices and actions to complete the spirit of the painting. The final element is a Giclee process of rendering the painting on canvas. The use of all of these ingredients, together, make up a new painting medium to get pigments on a canvas that represents the artist's heart. This is not a fast process of painting, it is a complex process. It takes about a year to paint one. This includes composition and all principles and elements of design that master painters use.

Real Nature ~ Walk Right In

Kendall’s paintings have more detail and clarity, more realistic natural color, an immense scope of view (what is at your left, right, at your feet, and in the sky), a sense of real virtual reality presence, more artistic composition, and a full range from shadow to bright elements (you can see detail in shadows and in the bright sky as you would be able to see in real nature).

Because of these elements, Kendall’s paintings capture the overwhelmingly inspiring first presence, or gasp factor, of the magnificent grandeur of nature which cannot be as realistically achieved by either traditional painting or photography. The vibrant colors and minute details excite all the senses. The reaction of most people who see Kendall’s paintings is that they feel they could walk right into the painting.
